Bill O’Brien got in certain punting practice at the podium Tuesday afternoon.
The Houston Texans coach repeatedly declined to comment on the firing of general manager Brian Gaine over the weekend after just 17 months on the project. Despite multiple overtures, O’Brien deferred into the statement chairman Cal McNair published Friday.
“Again I’ll go back to the statement that Cal (McNair) made,” O’Brien explained. “I’ll say it again. He did a thorough test of what goes on in this building on a day-to-day basis relative to the processes in place in many different areas. Not only coaching, scouting. Each area. Training area, equipment, nutrition, company side. Everything. That’s what I will tell you about that.”
Asked whether he thought Gaine had to be fired to move the organization forward, O’Brien declined to enlighten inquiring minds.
“I’ll go with the statement again,” he said. “I stand by the statement (Cal McNair) made. Cal made an announcement. He needed to make a decision. He assessed everything and he explained what he wanted me to do to enhance and assist with his vision of where he sees this organization moving or where it wants to enter his opinion.”
Pressed further about whether his relationship with Gaine shifted since the prior GM has been hired in Jan. 2018, O’Brien again passed.
“Again, I will say like I mentioned before is that earlier, in the statement that Cal made, Cal created an appraisal, a comprehensive evaluation and this is the conclusion that has been made and that is what I will say about that,” he explained.
While O’Brien declined to supply any background to his relationship with the former GM and also his function in the hiring of their next GM or offer anything of interest or substance, he wanted it known it was McNair’s decision and his occupation was also a portion of the test procedure.
“I think anytime you get information like that, right away, it’s a tough choice for Cal to make,” O’Brien said of the shooting. “But again he was quite clear with me personally with what he desired me to do to improve and his vision for the football team and his vision to the organization and that’s what we’re doing today. We are moving ahead. We’re excited about the future”
That future will include O’Brien and a new GM.
