Since the beginning of training camp approaches, so does a quarterback battle from the Big Apple.
Ahead of Giants minicamp broke in mid-June, Big Blue coach Pat Shurmur told reporters that, while incumbent veteran Eli Manning is still New York’s starter, beginner signal-caller Daniel Jones was”on track with the aim to be ready to play on Day 1.”
Shurmur advised the New York media to”have at it”, regarding speculation about the QB position, including,”The players that give our team the best chance to win playwith. Period. We have seen Eli do this for a lengthy time, so we’ll see what happens as we go down the street.”

While the coach is apparently opening the door for Jones to acquire New York’s starting QB job and start Week 1, Giants receiver Golden Tate states that there is no rush to the No. 6 overall pick to begin right away, not if Manning is still playing as a two-time Super Bowl champion.
“What I could I see, Eli Manning’s got a Great Deal of juice left,” Tate told NFL Network’s Scott Hanson on Total accessibility on Thursday. “He has still got some zip on his passes.
“I have been impressed. I believe we’ve got a good issue. We have got a Hall of Fame-type of quarterback in my mind and we also drafted a guy, a young man, so we don’t want Daniel to come in and save the day. We only need Daniel to keep on pace, learn as much as he possibly can in a fantastic environment and just take it daily. We do not need him win a match and to come in tomorrow. We only need him to stay on pace. I believe that’s very good news in my mind.”
A Super Bowl-winning QB and possible future Hall of Famer, Manning has a lot of rope at New York, even as the 38-year-old passer reveals signs of aging and fatigue year after year. Manning himself said he does not feel there is a rivalry between him and Jones heading into training camp, which kicks off on July 22 for the rookie and July 24 for the vet.
But in the post-2011 rookie wage scale era, it is uncommon for teams to draft a QB in the top 10 and not try to start him when possible. Since 2011, just three of 17 quarterbacks chosen in the top 10 did not start a minimum of 10 games his rookie year (Jake Locker, Jared Goff, Patrick Mahomes), and none of those 3 rookies were sitting behind future Hall of Famers.
Part of this reason Tate is confident from the Giants offense as currently assembled (orchestrated by Manning) is the variety and multiplicity of New York’s weapons, particularly himself.
“The two years I started in Seattle, I had been an outside man. My first two years in Detroit with two recipients I had been out and with three receivers I had been indoors. So I can kind of play everywhere and that is what makes me special,” Tate explained. “I believe I could be efficient anyplace and coach Shurmur will do a good job of moving myself and Saquon (Barkley) and Sterling (Shepard) and Cody (Latimer) and Corey (Coleman) and (Evan) Engram around. I think we could move where and just create mismatches and make plays and I believe that’s what is likely to make us unique this year.”
Signed in free service just days after the Giants exchanged Odell Beckham Jr. into the Cleveland Browns, Tate said he doesn’t feel pressure to substitute the athletic wideout’s production.
“I’m my own player. I’ve got a different type of playing,” Tate added. “I am just going in there to work hard and do my job the best I perhaps can better to help this organization win.
“I don’t care how we do it. If this means I get 1,500 yards, therefore be it when I get 600 yards, then ” I only want to win basketball games and also contact winning and get to the playoffs and being the New York Giants I grew up watching.”
Whether those Giants feature a 38-year-old or a 22-year-old resulting in the playoff charge remains to be seen.
