Danielle van de Donk winner gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
The breakthrough was finally found by the defending winners although united had looked set to hold on to their first stage since being marketed into the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
England boss Phil Neville and former Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra were among the crowd at Leigh Sports Village.
Since recovering from the cruciate ligament injury that ruled her england star Jordan Nobbs left her first start.
United needed a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 15th minute when Jessica Sigsworth’s cross picked six yards but she could not direct her pointer goal.
She sprang into existence in the 37th minute, and star striker Vivianne Miedema was quiet, although arsenal took their time getting going.
United goalkeeper Mary Earps was equal to this challenge, however, keeping out the header of the Dutchwoman and saving Miedema’s follow-up effort with her feet.
Arsenal started the second half as they finished the first however, they created one of the greatest chances of the match when the shackles did break.
Jane Ross was one time with Manuela Zinsberger however, also the’keeper saved well.
Three minutes Earps produced another excellent save to deny Kim Little and it was.
When Hayley Ladd fired wide, united had one last chance but the traffic, and mostly Miedema, laid siege to Earps’ goal.
Miedema headed broad, volleyed over, hit a pole and watched you cleared off the line before substitute Van de Donk applied the last touch as the ball.
