Aaron Rodgers is coming off a 49-sack year where he had been hindered by a bum leg, his lineup was trashed for stretching, and the crime as a whole was out of whack before and after canning Mike McCarthy.
In 2017, Rodgers was on speed for 50-plus sacks despite playing in just seven games (22).
Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Carl Lawson took Rodgers down 2.5 times in Week 3 of 2017, a six-sack day for the defense. The defensive end told NFL Network’s Good Morning Soccer on Monday that Rodgers is really easier to sack than some other QBs regardless of his mobility because he’s always looking for the big play.
“Frankly, I think it’s a lot easier to sack Aaron Rodgers than most quarterbacks,” Lawson explained. “He sits there, and he pats the chunk. At precisely the exact same time, sacking him do not mean nothing if you don’t do it for four quarters. You know, he came back .
“I mean, he is a simpler quarterback for me to sack , because he sits there, and that he probably gets eight to ten yards in the pocket. He has a fantastic left tackle in (David Bakhtiari). He sits there, he waits, he waits, becoming that read. When he gets ignored, he does not get flustered. I only saw him becoming frustrated possibly one time when I did bag him, which had been the third and a half sack that they took off (negated by a penalty)…”

Rodgers gunning for the big play was one gripe of the Packers QB the last few seasons as the group did not live up to expectations. Accepting sacks is not exactly a new thing for Rodgers, who has 412 sacks in 14 seasons. Counting only his 11 seasons as a starter, Rodgers was sacked 403 days (36.6 a year ), including two seasons of 50-plus sacks and 2 more above the 45-sack mark. Packers fans have been used to viewing QBs sacked over time, with Brett Favre holding the all-time listing of 525.
For many years, the Packers were ready to exchange the sacks for the big plays. When Rodgers had been divebombing defenses, the tradeoff worked great, along with the splash plays overcame the negative ones as Lawson mentioned, the Bengals lost to Green Bay at 2017 despite six sacks. In a discombobulated offense, like we saw for long stretches last season, the sacks stung.
With the change from McCarthy to new trainer Matt LaFleur, Green Bay is hoping a more varied offense will consistently scheme faster options for Rodgers. How this plays out will probably be one of the most fascinating subplots to the 2019 NFL effort.
If Rodgers is a lot easier to sack, which QBs are more difficult to take down?
“The roughest to sack? Those young quarterbacks that offensive coordinators like to protect,” Lawson said. “Perhaps a (Mitchell) Trubisky, or someone like this. The guys that sit maybe like five (steps), get the fast reads. The men who are like — I am not calling them not elite or nothing like this — but the men that kind of have more aid in their offense compared to (men like Rodgers).
“And Tom Brady. I haven’t sacked him played , I have only watched him. I watched the movie and enjoy’Oh, he is getting that out like 1.9, 2 (seconds).'”
To recap: QBs that hold on the ball are easier to sack. Ones that make it out fast are more difficult to take down.
Sounds about correct.
