The Houston Texans’ search for a new general manager carries on, and they’re no longer looking at a particular Patriots exec to fill the emptiness.
The group announced Friday it has ceased pursuing New England’s de facto general manager Nick Caserio — his official title is director of player personnel — to substitute Brian Gaine, whom the Texans declared last Friday.
“When we began the procedure to interview Nick Caserio to our EVP/GM position, we consulted the League office on several occasions, followed the procedures outlined in the League’s rules and thought we had been in full compliance,” Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair said in a statement. “We have now been made aware of certain terms in Nick’s contract with the Patriots. Once we had been made aware of these contract provisions, I advised Mr. [Bob] Kraft which we’d stop pursuing Nick.”

The reversal of course comes only a couple of days following the Patriots filed tampering charges against the Texans for trying to employ Caserio. On Friday, New England dropped the prices in the Aftermath of Houston waiving the white flag, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported, per a source.
Patriots owner Bob Kraft also published a statement indicating all is well between both organizations.
“The Houston Texans and the New England Patriots have always had a great working relationship,” Kraft said. “We appreciate how Cal McNair has managed this situation.”
Pelissero added that Caserio is under contract with the Patriots during the 2020 NFL Draft. The Texans, upon learning the details of his bargain, strove to take part in trade discussions with New England to get Caserio but had been turned down, based on Pelissero.
Houston now heads back to the drawing board to fulfill its vacancy. The club interviewed two candidates last weekend — former GMs Ray Farmer and Martin Mayhew.
