Raheem Sterling has called on society to”wake up” and realise footballers have been”human beings just doing their jobs” as gamers continue to be abused.
A range of players have been targeted online following lost penalties this year.
Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku was also racially abused by Cagliari buffs during a Serie A game a week, also Sterling says things needs to change.
He told Sky Sports News:”It’s simple to say what happens next but there’s a good deal of folks behind a computer screen. Those are the ones that believe they could get away with things like this and are unsatisfactory.
“We are in 2019 and we’re still discussing this. I can’t say I have the response to stop it as a society we will need to nail down on this.
“The people doing it need to awaken and understand it is a new age and discrimination isn’t something anyone should confront.
“We will need to develop as a society and understand we’re just out here doing our tasks. We’re human beings and we have feelings.
“it is a touchy subject but I can’t tell you I have the exact answer. However, as a society we need to perform better and love each other more.”
Sterling has been outspoken in calling out racism also called to become handed a stadium ban when he was one of a number of England players to become racially abused there last season.
Discussing on Saturday before England’s 4-0 win over Bulgaria, Marcus Rashford predicted on media firms to do much more to prevent their users abusing others on line.
“For me personally, it’s too simple to do anything you like on the internet,” Rashford explained. “Any people now could proceed and make balances and write what we want under anybody’s posts and no one would ever understand.
“The solution is simple to work out – if you’d like to show identification to make an account which means everyone can only have one account.
“For me, there’s hundreds of thousands of people who use my name on social media and they can write what they like.
“But folks are speaking out and people are listening so hopefully we can put it directly.”
